Nighthawk
2012, 18" x 21"
A.P. Edition of 7, 7 Unsigned Proofs
Soft Ground Intaglio Etching and Woodcut
In summer evenings, distinctive calls and whooping booms of Common Nighthawks can be heard in the skies above 19th century Downtown Bloomington buildings where they nest on the few remaining gravel roofs in search for insects in mid-air. This is a soft ground etching and woodcut “double drop” created from a drawing of an actual nighthawk study skin located in the Natural History Collection at Illinois State University. There are also 4 color variants that exist as proofs in tones of green and gold.
