Hoatzin: Amazon Bird
1998, 48 in x 84 in
Acrylic on Canvas
The acrylic painting of a Hoatzin shows a member of the existing population of rainforest bird species that are progenitors of the Archeopteryx, the oldest known bird and considered transitional from dinosaur species. Hoatzin: Amazon Bird is based on the artist’s travels to the Amazon Rainforest Basin in Peru to observe and study these elusive, exotically feathered birds. Their appearance includes bright blue skin and penetrating red eyes. Newly hatched young birds exhibit two well-developed claws on the bends of their wings that are used for climbing, distinctly linking them to their prehistoric ancestors.
